For most of the 18th and 19th centuries, these "Red Head Junks", or Ang Thau Tsung (红头船), were the primary means of transport for tens of thousands of Teochews who ventured to Southeast Asia in search of trade, work, or refuge. Accordingly, the Red Head Junks became synonymous in the region with the Teochew people.
